You hear yourself saying the old words, the ones you have said a thousand times, and somewhere in the middle of the sentence you realize part of you has stopped believing yourself. That gap is not proof you were never a believer. It may be honesty arriving late.
Some churches treat doubt like a disease, so people learn to carry their questions the way you carry a cough you are embarrassed about. But doubt is not always the enemy of faith. Sometimes doubt is faith refusing to keep lying.
